Gijs van der Sluis Model 540 Daybed
Gijs van der Sluis for Van der Sluis Stalen Meubelen
Designed in 1961 by Gijs van der Sluis and manufactured by Van der Sluis Stalen Meubelen in Culemborg, Netherlands, the Model 540 serves as both a sofa and a single daybed. The piece is built around a black lacquered square-tubular steel frame. Its convertible function relies on a manual sliding mechanism, pulling the seat forward extends the overall depth from 75 cm to 97 cm, transforming the three-seater sofa into a flat daybed. The backrest remains stationary during this conversion. The daybed has been reupholstered in Camira's sustainable Main Line Flax fabric. It includes the original structural feature of a loose, upholstered block that functions as a removable central armrest. The structural frame is original and displays light, age-consistent wear to the black finish.
