José Zanine Caldas

José Zanine Caldas (1919-2001) was a Brazilian self taught architect, designer and model maker. In the 1950s his company Móveis Artísticos Z produced affordable plywood furniture. From the 1970s he turned to monumental pieces carved from solid tropical wood, often salvaged, in his Móveis Denúncia series. Collectors prize both the graphic plywood work and the powerful carved pieces, especially those with clear provenance.
