He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and from an early age was interested in Art Deco modernism, a movement that rejected the excessive ornamentation of Art Nouveau and advocated simple, functional lines. In the 1920s, he founded a company with his twin brother, Jean Adnet, where they created furniture using simple geometric shapes and high-quality materials. In 1928, he was appointed director of the Compagnie des Arts Français (CAF), and helped the institution adopt a contemporary approach. His designs combined industrial materials, such as glass and metal, with simple, clean lines. In the 1950s, by collaborating with the luxury house Hermès, he reaffirmed his status as a pioneer of refined 20th-century French design.

Dimensions :

Width : 108 cm
Depth : 63 cm
Height : 75 cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1037/6236/2709/files/Jacques_Adnet_pique_sellier_leather_and_brass_desk_1950_1.jpg?v=1774456583
sue-mare-rosewood-and-amboyna-burl-desk-1921
Süe & Mare, Desk, rosewood and amboyna burl, 1921
This walnut, rosewood, and amboyna burl veneer desk dates from the early 1920s and was created by Louis Süe and André Mare. Though their backgrounds, tastes, and ideas were different, painter André Mare (1885-1932) and architect Louis Süe (1875-1968) collaborated on many creations. Breaking away from Art Nouveau, their goal was to perfectly combine aesthetics and functionality. After founding the Ateliers Français in 1912, they went further in their quest for innovation, elegance, and refinement, establishing the Compagnie des Arts Français in 1919. This was a groundbreaking revolution in the world of furniture and decoration at the time. Many painters, including Dunoyer de Segonzac and Véra, joined this institution, which made a strong impact at the 1925 International Exposition of Decorative Arts. The structure is organized around a central fall-front panel decorated with a marquetry medallion featuring a floral motif, inlaid with delicate mother-of-pearl details typical of the ornamental vocabulary of the École de Nancy. The door opens to reveal a compartmentalized interior with multiple sections and two drawers, offering a high level of functionality. On either side, open compartments and additional drawers rhythmically structure the composition with balance and clarity. Crafted with amboyna burl veneer with striking figuring, the piece is distinguished by a complex vertical architecture, animated by a fall-front with a pronounced slope that breaks with the strict geometry of the structure. The tall, slender base, composed of four tapered legs with fine geometric motifs, lends the ensemble an almost graphic elegance, characteristic of Iribe’s research on line and silhouette. This verticality recalls certain stylized figures found in his drawings and decorative projects, where the human body becomes a structuring axis within the composition. The fall-front is adorned with a central figurative panel drawing a female angel, treated in a synthetic and sculptural manner. This motif directly evokes Iribe’s graphic universe, close to that of George Barbier and to certain illustrations published in Le Témoin, the review he founded in 1906. Opening onto a highly functional interior, the cabinet reveals a fitted workspace composed of multiple compartments and a leather-lined writing surface.

The lower section is centered by a drawer fitted with two handles in the form of stylized passementerie, a particularly characteristic detail of the period. This taste for transposing textile or organic elements into rigid decorative motifs can be found across several of his interior design projects. The piece as a whole reflects a transitional aesthetic between late Art Nouveau and emerging Art Deco, where the richness of materials and the sensuality of forms coexist with a clear intent toward modernity. This cabinet thus bears witness to Iribe’s singular contribution to French decorative arts, marked by a deeply personal and resolutely modern vision.

Dimensions :

Width : 66cm
Depth : 38cm
Height : 112cm
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1037/6236/2709/files/Paul_Iribe_attr._amboyna_burl_cabinet_secretary_desk_circa_1920_2.jpg?v=1778115636
nice-desk-in-skai-and-steel-by-jacques-adnet-circa-1950
Jacques Adnet, Desk, skai and steel, circa 1950

Jacques Adnet

Dimensions: Height: 30.52 in (77.5 cm), Width: 59.06 in (150 cm), Depth: 30.71 in (78 cm)

Materials: Faux Leather, Steel

Style: Mid-Century Modern

Origin: France

Period: 1950-1959

Condition: Good, Wear consistent with age and use.
